Quick answer

Call Aviva on 0345 268 2194 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm; closed weekends and bank holidays), or use Aviva's online notification for the product: life insurance, pension, annuity, or bond and investments. Have the person's full name, date of birth, address and policy numbers, your own details, and for life, pension, annuity or bond claims the date and cause of death, whether they left a will, and whether they were married or had children. Aviva may then ask for details from the death certificate or the grant of probate. Checked on aviva.co.uk on 19 October 2026; details can change, so confirm with Aviva before you rely on them. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

What Aviva asks for

About the person who died: full name, date of birth, home address and policy numbers. About you: your name, relationship to them and contact details.1 For life insurance, pensions, annuities or bonds, Aviva also asks for:1

  • the date of death and the cause of death
  • whether they left a will
  • whether they were married
  • whether they had children

Aviva says it may then need more information, such as details from the death certificate or the grant of probate. The pension form needs either a full death certificate or a coroner's interim certificate.1 Aviva does not publish a limit for paying without probate; ask the claims team.

Pensions: who gets paid

If the pension holder hasn't named a beneficiary, Aviva says the pension trustee will investigate until it decides who should get any payment.2 Pension death benefits usually sit outside the estate, so the will doesn't decide them.
