About Settle
Settle is built for executors handling probate in England and Wales. If you have been named as executor in someone's will, or you are dealing with an estate where there is no will, Settle helps you understand what needs to happen, in what order, and why.
The probate process is not especially complicated for most estates, but the information available online tends to be vague, jargon-heavy, or written to sell you something expensive. Executors deserve clear, honest guidance that respects their time and intelligence. That is what Settle is for.

Our approach
All guides cover England and Wales only. Scotland and Northern Ireland have different legal frameworks and are not covered on this site.
We rely on primary sources: GOV.UK, HMRC, HM Courts and Tribunals Service, HM Land Registry, and published legislation. We check probate fees against current HMCTS fee schedules and update guides when guidance or legislation changes. Our editorial policy explains this in full.
None of what we publish is legal advice. Probate law is well-established for most straightforward estates, but the right answer for any specific situation depends on facts and circumstances we cannot know. For complex estates involving trusts, overseas assets, business interests, disputed wills, or significant inheritance tax, we recommend consulting a qualified solicitor.
The team
Settle is built by a small team. Our guides are written and maintained by the Settle editorial team: people with direct experience of the probate process in England and Wales, working against official sources. Every guide shows a "last updated" date so you can see when it was last reviewed.
