Quick answer
Call Tesco Bank's bereavement advisors on 0345 071 6153 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm), or write to Freepost Tesco Bank Estates Team, PO Box 27009, Glasgow G2 9EZ. Tesco Bank may ask for the original death certificate, an authority to close signed by all executors or next of kin, and a copy of the will. It only needs a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration if the accounts total more than £50,000 in the sole name of the person who died. If they also banked with Barclays, tell Barclays separately. Checked on tescobank.com on 19 October 2026; details can change, so confirm with Tesco Bank before you rely on them. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
How to tell Tesco Bank about a death
- Phone: 0345 071 6153, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.1
- Post: Freepost Tesco Bank Estates Team, PO Box 27009, Glasgow G2 9EZ.1
Tesco Bank says it can only take notification from the next of kin, or a solicitor acting on their behalf.1 It also says it may be able to check the electronic death register 10 days after the death has been registered, which can save posting the certificate.1
Barclays is separate. Tesco Bank is a trading name of Barclays Bank UK PLC, but its bereavement page says: "we won't automatically notify Barclays on your behalf."1 If the person also had a Barclays account, contact Barclays' bereavement team as well. Tesco Bank was not on the Death Notification Service's member list on 19 October 2026.2
Documents Tesco Bank may ask for
What you send depends on the account. Tesco Bank lists:1
- the original death certificate, or an original coroner's interim certificate
- an authority to close instruction, signed by all named executors or next of kin
- a copy of the will
- the Grant of Probate, Letters of Administration or Certificate of Confirmation, but only if the total value of the accounts is more than £50,000 and they are in the sole name of the person who died
Credit cards, loans and savings
- Credit cards: the account is frozen and cards are blocked. Interest and charges added after the date of death are refunded, and additional cardholders lose access.1
- Joint loans: the account stays open.1
- Joint savings: the surviving holder can use the account as normal.1
- ISAs: a surviving spouse or civil partner may be eligible to add their remaining tax-free allowance to a new or existing ISA.1
Tesco Bank's bereavement page covers credit cards, loans, savings, ISAs and Junior ISAs. Insurance bought under the Tesco name is not covered on that page, so ask the insurer named on the policy documents.
Before you call
- Have the card, loan or savings account numbers, the date of death and your own details ready.
- Ask for the balance at the date of death for each account, and a bereavement reference.
- Add up the sole-name balances: £50,000 decides whether Tesco Bank needs a grant.
