Closing a Leeds Building Society Account After Death

Written by Settle Editorial Team · Updated May 2026 · 5 min read

Leeds Building Society is one of the largest building societies in the UK, with headquarters in Leeds city centre. It is a mutual organisation owned by its members and offers savings accounts, cash ISAs, mortgages, and other products. If the person who has died held an account with Leeds Building Society, you will need to notify the society to freeze accounts, obtain a date-of-death balance, and eventually release funds to the estate.

How to notify Leeds Building Society of a death

Leeds Building Society can be notified by telephone, in branch, or online:

  • By telephone: Call Leeds Building Society's bereavement team. The team can freeze accounts immediately and advise on what documents to send. A number commonly associated with their bereavement service is 0113 225 7777, but contact details can change, so verify the current number at leedsbuildingsociety.co.uk before calling.
  • In branch: You can visit any Leeds Building Society branch with the death certificate and your identification. Branch staff will refer the case to the bereavement team.
  • Online: Check the Leeds Building Society website for an online notification option. Leeds has been developing digital services and an online form may be available.

Always record the date of the notification, the name of anyone you speak to, and any case reference number you are given. Request written confirmation that the account has been frozen.

If the deceased held accounts at several institutions, the free Death Notification Service (deathnotificationservice.co.uk) allows you to notify Leeds Building Society and other participating organisations through a single submission. You will still need to follow up directly with Leeds to provide physical documents and obtain the formal balance confirmation.

Documents you will need

Leeds Building Society will ask for documents at two stages: to freeze the account and then to release funds. Have these ready before making contact:

  • Original death certificate or a certified copy from the register office. Order at least eight copies when registering the death. They are cheaper to obtain at registration than to request later, and you will need one for each institution involved.
  • Proof of your identity: a current passport or driving licence.
  • Proof of your address: a utility bill or bank statement dated within the last three months.
  • The original will (if one exists): Leeds Building Society may ask to confirm your status as executor, particularly if the balance is near or above their threshold.
  • Passbook or account details: If the deceased held a passbook-based savings account, providing it alongside the death certificate helps locate the account quickly.
  • Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration: required if the combined balance across all Leeds Building Society accounts exceeds their probate threshold.

The Grant of Probate is not needed to make the initial notification. It only becomes relevant when you are ready to close the account and release funds above the threshold.

Leeds Building Society's probate threshold

Leeds Building Society sets its own internal figure for how much it will release without a Grant of Probate. Below this amount, funds can typically be released on production of the death certificate, your identification, and a small estates declaration. Above it, the accounts stay frozen until a sealed Grant of Probate is provided.

The threshold is understood to be in the region of £30,000, though you should confirm the current figure with Leeds Building Society directly when you first make contact. This figure applies to the total combined balance across all accounts held with Leeds Building Society, not to each account individually.

Note: Building societies set their probate thresholds independently and these figures can change without public notice. Do not rely solely on the approximate figure above. Always confirm the current Leeds Building Society threshold before assuming whether probate will be required.

For a comparison of thresholds across major UK banks and building societies, see our guide to bank probate thresholds.

Joint accounts

If the deceased held a Leeds Building Society account jointly with another person, the account ordinarily passes to the surviving account holder by right of survivorship. Leeds will update the account to the survivor's sole name on receipt of the death certificate. The surviving holder retains access to the account throughout the notification process.

The notification must still be made formally. The account does not update automatically. The surviving account holder should contact the bereavement team with the death certificate and their own identification.

ISAs held with Leeds Building Society

A cash ISA held in the deceased's sole name forms part of the estate. If the ISA balance, together with any other Leeds Building Society accounts, takes the total above the probate threshold, the ISA will remain frozen until the Grant of Probate is produced.

A surviving spouse or civil partner may be entitled to claim an Additional Permitted Subscription (APS). This allows the survivor to invest an extra amount into their own ISA equal to the value of the deceased's ISA at the date of death, without counting it against their annual ISA allowance. Raise this with Leeds Building Society's bereavement team early in the process, as there is a time limit for making the APS claim.

How long does it take

The timescale depends on whether the combined balance is above or below Leeds Building Society's probate threshold:

  • Below the threshold: Once all required documents have been received, processing typically takes a few weeks.
  • Above the threshold: Accounts remain frozen until the Grant of Probate is issued. Applying for probate can take several months. Once Leeds Building Society receives the sealed grant, account closure is typically processed in a similar timeframe to the below-threshold route.

If you have not received an update within four weeks of sending documents, call the bereavement team with your case reference number to follow up.
